HackSaturdays

A trial run from September - December will take place where the space will be open every 2nd Saturday for some project work .  With the next HackSaturday being 13th September from 1pm - 5pm

This will cater for members and non members alike. Some weekends will be used for events (now that we have our second room back from an exceptionally noisy server rack !) but at least one room will be available to all to use.

All we ask from non-members using the space is a small donation to help us keep the space available to the community.  We have not run events and workshop in quite some time but over the coming months we have plans to get some more up and running.  If you know anyone interested please let them know.  And of course if you have any events/workshops or ideas for the space please do not hesitate in contacting us at This email address is being protected from spambots. Drogheda Arts Festival 2014

Our second public event in as many years was held last weekend at the Drogheda Arts Festival.    Over the course of two days we had a number of stands allowing members of the public to learn how to solder LED badges, connect everyday items to the internet, learn how to make LED Graffiti and watch our doodlebot  in action!  We also had a number of members projects on display including a retro arcade cabinet and an  LED matrix.  During the two days we also met many people interested in Lightbox Labs.   It was great fun and we had a busy but fun packed weekend and we really hope to do it again next year!  Here are some shots from the Saturday and Sunday.

Unity 3D Session December 2012

unity 3d 1 20121222 1053494318

Dave Brennan @thedavil presented a great Introduction to Unity 3D at Lightboxlab in December. Unit 3D is Unity is a game development ecosystem: a powerful rendering engine fully integrated with a complete set of intuitive tools and rapid work flows to create interactive 3D content. The topics he went through on the day were under the following  headings.

  • Unity 3D? – What is it ? Why use it ?

  • Licensing & Pricing

  • What about the competitors? UDK, Cryengine etc.

  • Unity editor basics – The basic building blocks

  • Examining the 1st and 3rd person controller prefabs

  • Unity Asset Store and other places to get assets

  • The Unity community

  • Unity Scripting Basics

I think its fair to say that we all enjoyed the day and were very surprised on how far we were able to get in the space of a few hours with a very knowledgeable instructor. Hopefully after Christmas we'll get another run through and maybe look at creating terrains etc. Below is a quick video on some of what was put into practice on the day. Also the presentation can be downloaded HERE.

This is fully booked out now for the first session. If you wish to participate in the next series of tutorials let me know @ This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and I'll start a new list. When places are filled I'll arrange new dates.

Paul

Lightboxlab are holding a series of tutorials on Joomla CMS starting in April. For those who don't know too much about Joomla take a look at this link to Joomla's site. I've been using Joomla for a while now and have created a few sites using this great open source solution, Lightboxlab's website www.lightboxlab.ie being a real world example. This is more a hobby to me so I don't profess to be an expert by any means but I try to find my way around it. This is open to all and you don't need to an MSCS to attend. (If you do happen to have one though you can give me a hand :0) The only requirements are that you have a laptop, a sense of humor and a fiver if you need it.

Details

The cost to attend is €5 per class. Lightboxlab members have free admittance. Details are below. As this is the first set of tutorials I have no idea on how many sessions this will take as yet. Sessions will be approx 3 hours. If you are interested please let us know at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. as spaces are limited for the first session.
